Dr. Mom Complete Nursery Care Kit

Dr. Mom Complete Nursery Care Kit, PinkI bought this kit when we were preparing for our son's arrival and I didn't know what I'd need to have on hand. He's now three months old and we've used a handful of the items -the aspirator, the forehead thermometer, the digital thermometer, the nail clipper and the nail files. I was particularly glad to have the health-related items on hand when we suspected our baby might be sick or congested late in the evening.

I have no complaints about the quality of the components, and I imagine we'll go on to use other items (hair brush, toothbrush, teething ring) within the next several months. I don't think we'll need the syringes, since most medications come with their own, but I guess they don't hurt to have.

All in all, a good buy at a good price that lets new parents feel prepared.

I love this kit! It brings everything I need for my baby both grooming and safety wise all in one cute package. I was searching the stores for the best deal on grooming and safety supplies and all kits lacked some item so I would have been forced to buy separately which is more expensive or they did not come in a nice color for a baby girl. I am glad I found this. Thank you amazon for having it in stock.

Not BPA free, thermometer takes forever to work, syringe is questionable, snot sucker does not work... all in all, pretty useless.

Several items in the kit seem a little cheap. We ended up buying another thermometer that was faster at reading. Our baby is still very young so there has not been cause to use everything in the kit as yet.

Bought this kit as a gift for a new mom who had registered for it. Carrying case did not match the photo. Instead of being solid pink it was a pink pattern. Not a big deal but always annoying when the pictures aren't accurate. Kit seems to include all the essentials.

Mueller Soccer Ankle Brace

Mueller Soccer Ankle Brace, Black, MediumI bought this after I fractured my ankle playing indoor soccer after my foot had healed. I have a history of weak ankles. I like it compared to other braces because it fits in my soccer shoe and does not limit my foot movement as severely as some of the others. Other braces I have tried made me feel like I had lost the feel for the ball, but these were much better. I liked it so much I just bought a second one for my other foot for match play. I also recently took a mean slide tackle to both ankles, and felt like the foot with the brace on it fared better than the one without, so it works well as an ankle protector as well. The only down side for me is that the laces look kind of bulky on the front of the brace, and there's not really a good way to hide them.

Just what I need to wear with my cleats. It is small and compact but gives me the support i need, thanks!

My daughter had been having problems with her ankle while playing soccer, I'm not sure if it is from pot holes on the field or just too much playing, but she had been complaining that her ankle felt weak and sore. I purchased the Mueller Soccer Ankle Brace for her and she loves itshe has actually taken it to school for PE and so we may have to purchase another one to keep in the soccer bag. It is easy to put on, she can tighten it as much as she needs and most importnanlyshe can play games with it. I would recomment it for anybody who feels they need a little extra support.

We have found others and this is the one my daughter loves for soccer... Helps her alot.. She was rolling her ankles easy on the soccer field and after we got this product, the easiness of rolling her ankles went away.. Works great and she has used them for basketball also.

Bris Step - Foot Rest Designed for Rabbinical Circumcision - Compact to Fold & Fit in Mohel Bag

Bris Step - Foot Rest Designed for Rabbinical Circumcision - Compact to Fold & Fit in Mohel BagI've been searching for a small collapsible step stool to carry in my diaper bag for my 3 year old son. When I came across this one, I thought I'd give it a try. It worked great!! The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because you have to be careful when using it on a tile surface, like a bathroom floor. It tends to slip around so I just put rubber tabs on the bottoms of the legs, which prevented it from slipping. All in all, this makes a great, portable travel potty stool (mostly for boys)!!

O'Keeffe's Working Hands Cream, 3.4 oz.

O'Keeffe's Working Hands Cream, 3.4 oz.I get dry skin on my hands and feet compliments of my mother.. The type of work I did in my younger days didn't help matters any.

During my 20's and 30's it wasn't much of a problem, now at 47, the past few years have been the worst. Especially during the winter months.

After a horrible last year trying to make do with over the counter preparations, and even a wasted trip to a podiatrist or two, I decided to get serious about this problem.

So I did some research on the net and ordered all sorts of products, even spending a fair number of dollars down at the local Bath and body store, mostly for naught. Most of the products were either greasy, oily, has objectionable smells or just plain didn't work.

I narrowed it down to two products. Okeefe's and one of the beeswax type treatments.

Hands down this is the best product I've used on my hands, cheaper as well. And miraculously it contains no oil. In fact after application you'll be hard pressed to tell it's even there. But trust me, it is.

The beeswax stuff is a good product as well, and works quite well. But they must add mineral or some other type of oil to make the beeswax workable. If you had your hands in water all day, the beeswax product may last longer.. But for daily application in the majority of circumstances, I believe Okeefe's is the superior product. It's cheaper as well.. It uses a similar wax, a small amount of paraffin to seal in moisture, but it's much less noticeable and doesn't make your hands shine.

Whereas the beeswax product only seals in moisture, Okeefe's draws moisture to your hands and seals it in. So it's doing multiple things at the same time. Don't ask me to explain further, it just works.

For you folks that don't know how to apply a stiff cream like this out of a tub. It's real simple. Just scrape a small amount with the back of your thumb nail and place it on the back of your hand. Then rub the back of your hands together until its almost gone, then rub the rest into your palms and fingertips. You wont believe the hydration you feel immediately. And like I said in a few minutes you'll be hard pressed to tell there's anything there, until in a few days you notice your hands looks years younger and you've seen the end of cracked skin in the winter time.

Use it after you shower, after you wash dishes and before bedtime until your hands are healed.. Then once or twice a day.

After seeing the ad for O'Keeffe's hands cream on a page in Popular Mechanics, I initially thought the promise of fast healing for cracked fingers too fantatastic to be true. I dedided to take a chance anyway and after a fruitless search for it in local stores placed my order with Amazon. Mrs. Spudman had tried multiple products for her painfully cracked fingertips so we thought 7 dollars was a worthwhile gamble.

With some misgivings but no trepidation, Mrs. Spudman began using the new hand cream. We both did a visual inspection of her fingertips before beginning this trial so we could compare the effects (if any) of using the O'Keeffe's. After our finger inspection and evaluation of the width and depth of the cracks, Mrs. Spudman began using O'Keeffe's on her hands following the product directions.

Just so I could get into the act, I decided to experiment with the O'Keeffe's also on some painful cracks on the heels of my feet. Yes, I know this is a hand product, but I thought these nuisance cracks that only respond slowly to other products would be a good test. For five days so far I've used O'Keeffe's on the more painful heel and used Heel Rescue on the other heel.

On the hand the cream feels more silky than greasy. It is absorbed by the skin readily and makes them feel smooth.

Results:

Incredibly we've seen dramatic improvement on Mrs. Spudman's hands in only five days while she continues to use the O'Keeffe's daily. The cracks on her fingertips have closed and no new ones have appeared. If we hadn't seen this with our own eyes, we wouldn't believe it. Such an improvement seems too impossibly far-fetched. And yet.....

As for me the O'Keeffe's treated heel healed in only a few days. Though I've been using Heel Rescue on the other heel more frequently and more copiously, that heel is still a little tender though improved.

Conclusion: O'Keeffe's is the real deal. It has surpassed Udderly Smooth Udder Cream as Mrs. Spudman's new, favorite hand treatment.

This stuff rubs into your hands and takes just a few seconds to be all absorbed. It does feel a bit different than other creams; it took me a couple of applications to get used to that. At work I need to wash my hands with disinfectant soap several times an hour. My fingers get cracks and my skin gets horribly dried out. By applying the Working Hands morning, a couple times a day and at night before bed, the cracks were gone in a couple of days. I LOVE THIS STUFF!!!

There was a 3-year period when I used to suffer from frequent skin splitting at the ends of my thumbs and first fingers. I tried various skin lotions and cremes (including O'Keeffe's creme in a tube) but nothing was helping, so I needed to masking-tape my thumbs and first fingers keeping the tape on 24 hours a day. It was a real nuisance.

Then about 8 months ago, I found out about O'Keeffe's Working Hands paste in a small jar (it's listed on Amazon as a creme, but it's really more of a paste). I thought I'd give it a try and I'm so glad that I did! I started putting it on my thumbs and first fingers ends, just after I got into bed at night. I didn't apply it during the day just at night. And two weeks later, the splits had healed. I've continued to use it most nights, and in the last 8 months my skin has not split even once. What a relief!

I also maybe once a week apply it to the heels of my feet, again at night time. The former trouble I used to have with excess callousing, has disappeared. My heel skin is now much, much softer. O'Keeffe's has another product that is designed more for feet, but I haven't needed to try it, as the Working Hands works just fine for me.

The 3.4 oz jar looks like it's going to last me about 9 months. A little goes a long way.

This product is amazing. It really works!!! I have tried so many different product for dry, chapped hands and those little cuts that pop up on my fingers, both over the counter and prescription types, but this has them all beat. It's not greasy at all which I really like and a little goes a long way. I'm still working on my first jar although I have two more jars in reserve. There is no odor, smell or anything associated with it which I also really like. The price is very good although I'd gladly pay more to make sure I'm never without it.

Jason Natural Vitamin K Creme Plus 2 oz Cream

Jason Natural Vitamin K Creme Plus 2 oz CreamDO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT! It causes contact dermatitis. I bought this product and I used it for 3 weeks just fine. Then, after 3 weeks, I began to get a light allergic reaction. This reaction turned into a full blown reaction within hours. My undereyes swelled up, turned bumpy, and red in the area that I rubbed the cream. It is itchy, and nothing I've tried will help the problem not real aloe vera, not warm camomile tea bags, and not antihistamine. It has now been 7 days and the allergic reaction is still lingering around. It looks terrible and everyone I pass has asked if I was okay.

I also put this product on my boyfriend and he immediately had a strong red reaction to this product. Two friends of mine apparently have used JASON products and they both had developed a rash to JASON deodorant and lotion.

JASON cosmetics has not taken any liability for this product and has barely offered a refund. JASON is sending me a label to return the product, but I would like to keep it just in case. The consumer relations representative was also unprofessional and uncourteous about the problem, even though I had to miss work. She seemed like she has gotten many calls complaining about their products, demonstrating that they are unwilling to back up the safety of their product. If enough people complain about their products, a lawsuit can be put together.

Everybody else who wrote a 1 star review is right about this product. I used it for a few weeks with mixed results, then started to get red swelling in the areas where the cream was applied. After one more use, I experienced extreme dryness, itchy eyes, and dark red areas around the eyes. This is a crap situation for a product that is supposed to help, and instead does so much damage. Definitely DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!

I am hoping that others will comment on this issue, had I read G.lee's comment I would not have bought the vitamin K crème. I've been told it looks like I've been burned around my eye area. I like to walk and run and constantly suffer from different annoyances and pain in my feet and toes. Currently, I am in training for a 2 day breast cancer walk and am looking for something to help with a longer second toe that consistently bruises, peripheral neuropathy, mild hammertoes as well as occasional metatarsal pain.

These crests looked promising however, they weren't so comfortable and I couldn't wear them effectively. The curvature of the crest bothers my toes when I have socks and shoes on and makes it uncomfortable walking. I expect that it is just me, but I thought I would share my experience with this item.

Used to order these from Foot Smart but they changed the type of hammer toe crest they offer. Searched on line for this type and was happy to find them, ordered several and hope they continue to offer them. Very comfortable and helpful for those with hammer toes, have used for two or three years now and it has really helped with the hammer toe problem.

Duracell EasyTab Hearing Aid Batteries Size 13 (24 batteries total)

Duracell EasyTab Hearing Aid Batteries Size 13I am an electrical engineer and mention this as it's easy to check batteries with a meter. I decided to try Amazon's Durcells for size 13 hearing aid batteries (what could go wrong?) I usually buy them at CVS, or where ever convenient. I ordered the 24 pack. I usually use the rechargeables, but decided to switch to standards, as I was going in hospital for some surgery. and charging the batteries every night would be a pain.

BTW, rechargeables work very well but are expensive. Immediately upon opening the shipping package I noticed the "use before date" was March 2013, only a few months away! Worse, upon putting them in my aids, they started beeping the low voltage alarm. Eight of the batteries measured between 1.4 (one was normal) and and the others ranged down to .8 volts (discharged). Keep in mind these were supposed to be new (over 1.4 volts) and have a shelf life of five years.

By coincidence, Amazon sent me a questionnaire about the battery quality and purchase. It's obvious to me they have laid around for years in their stock. Buy these at your own risk.

Duracell batteries are the best... have used them for several years. This is a good price and the buying in quanity feature is a real nuisance avoider. Excellent packaging protects the batteries so they can be everywhere you go and zinc air batteries do not activate until the sticker is taken off of them so they stay fresh for a longer time.

Spenco 2nd Skin Dressing Kit

Spenco 2nd Skin Dressing KitI got a couple of bad blisters one day before I was supposed to run a 1/2 marathon. I had bought this kit a few years back to keep in my backpacking First Aid Kit since I never get blisters, I'd never used the kit. I am amazed at how well this worked. It did soothe and cool immediately just like it says on the box, and the bandage stayed on the bottom of my foot all day in shoes, even when my feet got sweaty.

The next day for the marathon, I again applied this and it stayed on the bottom of my foot for 13 1/2 miles....no bandaid would last that long. And it doesn't hurt when you remove it, either!

These really work! While I haven't used these on my feet, I always bring them when we go hiking. My youngest daughter had some new boots on our last hiking trip, and she started to form some blisters. We put 2nd Skin on her and didn't hear any more complaints for the rest of the trip. In fact, she actually said it felt good. My only complaint about this particular kit is that it doesn't come with enough of the adhesive strips, but I have a feeling duck tape might work in their place.

I've used this product for years and swear by it. I have had open blisters on my heels while cross-country skiing and after putting this on at a lunch break was able to ski the rest of the day, pain-free. It doesn't rub off, even in the shower.

When I coached soccer, I used this to treat my player's blisters and they could go right back into the game without even feeling the blister and it seems to help the blisters heal faster too (but it could just seem that way)

I am training for a marathon and I continually get blisters on the ends of my toes. I use the second skin and their adhesive tape to cover the ends of my toes and toenails. It has prevented further damage except when the gel dressing moved from the nail and nail bed on one toe and allowed more irritation to my already sore toe. I am still looking for a method of preventing the blisters, but until then, Spenco second skin works decently.

Relax to Sleep

Relax to SleepLike most therapists, I'm always on the lookout for recordings of guided relaxation for clients to use at home to reinforce and deepen what they learn in their sessions. There are many such recordings out there, and while many of them are adequate, not many are ones I find truly excellent. It's hard to find ones that have the combination of a good script, a good delivery, good music and good recording quality. Some voices appeal to some people; few appeal to most of my clients.

Several years ago, William Barton, Ph.D., put out "Relax to Sleep". It immediately became my new favorite and has stayed one of my favorites. Almost all clients respond positively to it. I give it not just for sleep, but for general relaxation and stress reduction training.

The combination of Dr. Barton's voice, the guided imagery used, the inclusion of breathing phrases, and the music background that comprise Track 1 are ideal for me. In addition to the script, Relax to Sleep has a background of beautiful guitar music by Teja Bell. Bell is a Zen priest whose "New Age" background music on this CD creates a meditative, deeply calming effect that supports the script very well. Track 2 is the sound of ocean waves and an occasional sea bird, without voice or music.

Track 1 of "Relax to Sleep" begins with what I believe is the single most important thing for people with problems in sleeping to learn to do: focusing on the moment and letting go of other concerns. Dr. Barton guides this by first directing attention to restful breathing and to releasing all tensions on the exhalation. Then a suggestion of an image of a metal box with a heavy lid is given, into which all concerns can be placed for the night. (When I first re-read this sentence, I discovered that I'd written "mental" box! I doubt that this unconscious association will be mine alone and makes the phrase even more evocative than I thought.)

After this are autogenic phrases for muscle heaviness and comfort; calm and regular heart beat, warm and relaxed solar plexus, effortless breathing, mind quiet and serene, and whole body relaxed and warm. An image of tension streaming down the body and out the toes is occasionally given. This is always accompanied by a descending glissando of the guitar. A musical vocabulary is thus established. Later, when this glissando occurs without the spoken script, we know just what to do, without thinking . After the autogenic phrases, and about 12 and half minutes into the CD, the words end and the soothing guitar music continues for ten minutes. Then the sound of ocean waves joins the music. By the end, the music fades and only the ocean waves are heard for the final four minutes. In total, the CD is 27½ minutes long. Listeners are likely to be sound asleep by this time or at least, deeply relaxed.

There are several things I especially like about this CD in addition to the script itself. First, is the voice. It is calm, steady, reassuring, with just the right pacing and phrasing. Too fast, and listeners have a hard time relaxing. Too slow, and the listener's mind can start to wander. Second, Teja Bell's music is ideal for relaxing, letting go of stress and drifting into sleep. The guitar uses just enough of an echo effect for a sustained flow of the melody that facilitates sustained letting go in the listener. Behind the solo guitar is a background of even more sustained harmonics that blend into one another. This creates a continuous surrounding cocoon for the melody -and the listener -to float on. This "drone" background with its trance-inducing quality is typically used in Indian classical music but much less often in Western music. The listener is almost unaware of it, and it is ideal for a sleep tape.

The only element of the recording that doesn't work as well for me as all the rest is the ocean surf sound. Track 1 ends with this and Track 2 consists only of this. This is an entirely individual response, I know. For me, the incoming surf "crashes" onto shore and has a stimulating rather than restful effect. Many people will find the surf sounds peaceful and relaxing. Dr. Barton is an avid sailor, so of course, this would be one of the most relaxing sounds in all nature for him. The sound isn't too loud and since I'm usually asleep before this portion begins, it's not really a problem for me.

Overall, the combination of the voice, the autogenic phrases, the music and the technical quality of the CD, create an excellent program for anyone to use for sleep and for general relaxation and stress reduction.

These spot bandaids are just the perfect size---and as if they know their market, they come in pairs ;)---and I don't have to worry about their wearing off/out or falling off (in fact, it takes some effort to get them off after the run), even with heavy (white) cotton shirt on, and I can barely feel they are there.

MDF® ER PremierTM Stethoscope Color: Burgundy

MDF® ER PremierTM Stethoscope Color: BurgundyAfter years of using an HP Sprague Rappaport, it became apparent that I needed a new scope. To my horror, not only had HP sold it to Phillips, but Phillips had discontinued it 6 years ago and no parts were available.

As a family physician in full time practice , a team physician , working urgent care several times a month, serving with Medical Reserve Corps and Urban Search and Rescue, I need a scope that meets some stringent requirements:

1) The acoustics have to be outstanding and equivalent to the HP.

2). It has to perform well and survive in a variety of service environments, both noisy and quiet, clinic and urgent care / ER / field.

3). It must be easily portable.

4). It must be from a reputable company that would stand behind their work and would provide service and parts for the lifetime of the scope.

5) It must be a reasonable cost.

Having thought through these requirements, I tried 2 Sprague types that were on the market and was disappointed. The acoustics simply were not what I needed. To be fair, I did not try the MDF Sprague with the X design.

My colleagues raved about the Litmann Cardiology 3. I found that to be costly, but more importantly, the acoustics were simply inferior to my HP Sprague ( as an older MD with tinnitus, the Cardiology 3 did not work).

Finally , I came across a company I never heard of , MDF. After researching out the company and scopes, in sheer desperation I decided to try the ER Premier scope. When I compared it to the HP Sprague and the Litmann, it was the equivalent of the HP, the Litmann being a very distant 3rd place. Having used it now for a month in various settings, it meets my requirements superbly . The cost is reasonable ( particularly if you buy it through Amazon ). The company is sound and has a good track record for service and provides parts for the lifetime of the scope. AND-I don't have to go with the electronic scopes !

Who could ask for more ?

I bought this stethoscope 3 months ago now and I'm very impressed. The initial impression is stunning in this all black color! I was looking purposely for an all black scope, partly to distinguish from most others, and partly because of visual preference. I previously had the Littmann Classic II in black, and that was a decent scope to begin with. My interest focused more on being able to assess lung sounds more accurately, and determining the subtle differences in murmurs, thus the need for a dual or bi-lumen scope. The sensitivity of the chest piece is higher, sounds are louder and clearer by 2-3 points on a scale of 1-10 compared to the Littmann being a 6-7 on clarity and volume. At first the MDF scope seemed less comfortable than my Littmann, but now I've gotten used to the stiffer ear cushion pieces, however they are comfortable none the less. This MDF stethoscope is significantly heavier than my Littman though, mainly due to the use of more material to construct it. It also feels more durable than other dual lumen scopes; I compared my scope to one of my coworker's who has a Littmann Cardiology III, and her's has already begun to lose its shine and luster by turning opaque and dry-like in texture. Both her Littman and my MDF stethoscopes were purchased within 4 months difference in time but in new condition, and my scope continues to shine like when purchased. One downside to my MDF scope is that you sometimes have to tilt your head to position your ears while auscultating; depending on your position in relation to the patient's, you may have to 'nod' up or down to listen correctly. Final impression: well constructed, excellent acoustics, stealthy attractive appearance, all at an unbeatable price. It respectable alternative to a pricier Littmann or Harvey Tycos.

This stethoscope exceeded my expectations. It feels very durable and is aesthetically pleasing. I can hear better with this scope than I ever could with a cardiology three, I mean by a long shot too. It is heavy to wear and the tubing is a little on the stiff side.

Adventure Medical Kits SOL Origin Survival Tool

SOL Origin Survival Kit and Essential Survival ToolsSOL is a good company and has some quality products, but unfortunately this "kit" is not one of them. For what you get the kit is far too bulky, not nearly comprehensive enough for the price, and the combo knife/whistle/light is just outright junk.

You can build your own much more comprehensive "pocket kit". I'd start with a top quality Wenger 16981 lock blade Swiss Army Knife (has a great saw and other useful tools and it is available here at Amazon) and add the other items included in this SOL Kit. You won't spend much more than the SOL kit and you'll have much better equipment in a smaller space.

I bought a survival kit tin from bepreparedtosurvive and added Katadyn MicroPur Purification Tablets In Your Choice of Styles, a liter water bag, a Streamlight 73001 Nano Light Miniature Keychain LED Flashlight, Black, a Adventure Medical Kits Fox 40 Rescue Howler Whistle the Wenger 16981 Evolution Lock S 13 Swiss Army Knife Ergo Grip With Safety Lock Blade a few strips of removable backing duct tape, a few survival food tablets, some 250lb kevlar thread, safety pins (free from the dry cleaner), a signal mirror, a fresnel lens (solar fire starter), a flint + steel and some tinder, a few fishhooks and small spool of BRAIDED fishing line (doesn't tangle like monofiliment line). I also added a BugX Insect Repellent Towelette 25 Foil Packs/Box 30% DEET in a Water Based Formula That Is Non-greasy and Non-staining. Stuff a few bandaids, steri-strips, and a packet of neosporin in the odd spaces left over and you'll be pretty well prepared for minor emergencies.

Wrap the tin with an Adventure Medical Heatsheets Emergency Blanket, and some more kevlar thread then put it in a ziplock for a real pocket kit. That's food, water, shelter, fire, and tools all in less space than the SOL kit which lacks some of these basic requirements.

I bought this little SOL kit, thinking it was of the same caliber as some of their other products, but right from the beginning I was disappointed with the bulk, poor quality, and lack of components. This is a cool gadgetty toy, but it lacks substance, and the backbone of the kit, the knife, is weak and easily broken. It's a wannabe tool in a toy survival kit. You can do a much better job yourself, even using the cheap and ubiquitious Altoids tin.

Sorry SOL, you just didn't get this one right.

I have been waiting for this item since it was first announced.

The list price from the 3rd party amazon seller ($84) is much higher than the actual MSRP ($60). However amazon's discount brings it down to a reasonable cost, compared to other buying options. Just make sure you don't think you are getting 40% off, because you aren't.

The case is big. Think 2 or 3 altoids tins stacked on each other, or 2-3 decks of playing cards. It does fit well into a baggy jeans or jacket pocket though. The case is very well made, from nice hard plastic. The main container has a rubber o-ring to provide waterproofing. It seems like it would take reasonable drops or impacts quite well.

Unfortunately, the usable space of the box is much less than you would get from 2/3 altoids cans. This is because over 1/2 of the thickness of the box is taken up by the built in tools. Now, if you consider that you would also take up that space if things were loose in the box, it comes out pretty fair, but there is "dead" loss due to the structure that holds things in place, and you lost flexibility in choosing what to pack. I wish they had the case more open, with the tools just loose inside to maximize space and flexibility.

The knife is nice, but not very durable. It is very small (swiss army sized?), but fits well in the hand, and has a nice blade. The knife is exceptionally easy to open one handed (the easiest knife to open I have, except for the assisted open ones). The handle is light plastic however, so any heavy duty (or really even light/medium) chopping or battoning would destroy it immediately. The knife is really only useful for cutting cord/cloth/seatbelt or perhaps shaving some small sticks into tinder etc. You could use it to fillet a fish, or clean a small animal. Certainly better than nothing, but any serious carrier will need to have a more heavy duty knife. The knife has a lock to hold it open, and locks into the case with a small button to release. While you can open the knife easily one handed, it is a tad bit hard to get out of the case one handed. I really recommend carrying a higher quality knife in addition to this for almost any situation

The light on the knife is pitiful. A very low intensity LED. Possibly good enough for providing very close up light to see by while lighting a fire or something (assuming you are lighting the fire a few inches away). Completely useless for navigation/signaling/travel. This is the brightness of a single LED keychain light for getting a key into a lock etc. Possibly could be used to read by.

The whistle on the knife is decent. Not equal to a dedicated howler or something though, but very convenient, and much louder than yelling.

The compass is simple and functional. No where near as accurate or reliable as a dedicated military style compass, but serviceable in an emergency. The compass must be held perfectly level. Even a slight tip causes the edge of the disc to touch the plastic and freeze the compass so it does not rotate freely. The compass is stored outside the case, so drops and impacts could shatter the bubble fairly easily rendering it broken.

The fire starter is basically a cigarette lighter, without the fuel. Easy to use one handed, and tosses out some nice sparks. Certainly not as powerful as a dedicated flint/magnesium/blastmatch, but good in a pinch. Make sure you spin the wheel the right direction.

The signaling mirror is very nice. Equal to ones purchased individually. Has a nice aiming hole, and some instructions. Comes with a protective sticker applied as to prevent scratches. Not removable from the case.

the supplies are ok. Some tinder, wire, twine, and aluminum foil. Also a small fishing/sewing kit. They barely fit into the case. You would certainly want additional supplies such as a survival blanket (which would absolutely not fit in the case)

All in all, you can absolutely find MUCH higher quality and more powerful tools if you buy separately. However, the case is convenient as an every day carry item to make sure you have at least minimal basics with you at all times. If you are the kind who carries a real knife, real flashlight, multi-tool, etc at all times then the kit probably has less value, but I will likely keep it in my jacket pocket all the time for use as backup

For those considering an "all in one" survival tool such as the various 7 in one, 6 in one tools available this one is CLEARLY superior. The other ones out there are absolute junk in comparison, and do not provide a knife or the consumable supplies. It is however quite a bit bigger and more expensive.

For me, this will replace the 7 in one I was carrying (heading to the trash!). The BlastMatch I carried will get moved into the backpack kit instead of the every day kit. I will continue to carry an assisted opening folder, and a more powerful pocket flashlight.

If you're a serious outdoorsman, camper, survivalist, or naturist, you're not going to buy this kit anyway. You'll construct your own kit out of best-of-breed equipment. For the normal guy who needs something in an emergency situation, the Origin rocks. I don't understand the sentiment from others that the kit is cheaply constructed. I pounded six tent stakes into the ground with mine. It's made of *very* thick plastic.

Yes, if you used the tools in this kit on a routine basis as your primary gear during camping trips, they would not last. They're not meant to. They're meant for emergencies. The knife in this kit is not meant for you to give up your primary field knife ... it's meant to be used if you find yourself without your gear and you otherwise have nothing else to rely on. It also teaches a beginner to focus on the absolute basics necessary for survival.

Put this in your car, bugout pack, or minimum carry kit. It's an excellent tool of last resort.

Depending on who you are, and for what scenarios you plan to use this, determines whether or not this kit is for you.

I write this from a perspective of an advanced backpacker with extensive military training, including various survival training. I am not a Bear Grylls nor any other type of professional survivalist. In my younger days, I loved the challenge of self-induced suck-fests. I consider myself an able enthusiast, not an expert.

I find the biggest question I faced with the SOL Origin was if it was worth the cost. Here is my opinion. For beginners, yes. For advanced folks, it is worth it as an easy toss in backup to a primary kit, maybe for the fanny pack when leaving behind the main backpack. For the seasoned outdoorsman, make your own kit and save the money.

For the average Joe, the beginner, this kit is an exceptional insurance policy. It's simple. It's basic. It will help you survive an emergency situation for a short period until help finds you. For $30 some bucks, it's cheap insurance that's easy to toss in the car and take along on a nature trip.

Why is it so valuable for this kind of person?

First, it's there. No kit is good if you don't take it with you. I wouldn't call it pocketable unless you like big things in your cargo pocket, but it is easily packable. Second, it provides the tools to overcome the biggest threats to emergency survival: regulating body temperature (fire/heat), signaling tools in order to be found, a guide to find a good water source, and tools to help find and get food. This kit doesn't do the work for you, but it assists the novice in figuring it out.

Let's break down the content.

Survival Guide: This gives you the basic fundamentals of survival. It will arm you just enough to make it to the "Get Found" stage. It will not turn you into Man vs. Wild. I do wish some of the graphics were better done with a little more explanation for the novice. The biggest value, in my opinion, is the instruction on getting water, in a generalized environment.

Fire Starter and Kindling: The fire starter relies on the same principle as the common lighter used by smokers, except that there is no fuel. You spin it just like a lighter and sparks fly. It has rubber grips to help you hold it securely. The included kindling will get a fire started, but it won't keep a fire going. Before lighting the kindling, be sure you have a collection of small, thin, dry twigs. The included kindling is designed to start a small fire. Along with your small, thin, dry twigs, you'll want another collection of small sticks that have some meat to them, but not thick like a log. After you have a good fire going with the bigger sticks, then you can burn bigger pieces of wood. As you can see, the kit gets you going, but you still have to work to get the fire.

Signal Mirror: If you've never used a signal mirror, learn. It's easy to practice in the back yard on a sunny day. In a survival situation, and in the right condition (various degrees of sunny), it is a powerful tool that can get you found from many miles away. Why a signal mirror is superior to any old reflector, is because you can aim it fairly accurately. If nothing else, it's a handy mirror while camping.

Whistle: On the opposite end of the very same fire starter, is the whistle. Anything that can extend the range with which you can be found, is valuable. When the sun isn't shining, blow the whistle. In some conditions where the sun doesn't shine, sound actually travels better and further. Blowing a whistle also takes a little less out of you than yelling. Every little bit counts in an emergency situation.

Compass: Generally speaking, it is best to stay put when lost. However, if you generally know what direction a road, trail, lake, river is, this will generally get you there. It is not a precision compass like the kind I used in the military for land navigation, but it points north and is a valuable aid. It doesn't matter how good you are, in the thickest of woods at night, everyone can get disoriented.

Knife: This is a small knife and yet will be a handy tool. It fits nicely into the bottom of the case. The blade seems sharp and has a nice curve to it for filleting and cutting. Like everything else, it is bright orange. Since the knife is pretty small, you will appreciate that it is easy to see and find. Common knife use often means setting it down at times and small knives are easy to lose in nature.

Light: The knife also incorporates a small LED light. I like this one because for being cheap, it is not a press and hold light. You can click on it and it stays on. It's not a powerful light, but it gets the job done in a pinch. It's not a flashlight, it's a small light source that's there when you need it. This light should last hours even with the small watch type battery.

Sheet: For a simple sheet, this has many uses from signaling, to gathering water, to storing things. I didn't open it up, but I don't think it's big enough to be a body blanket.

Needle/Sewing Kit: I see this more for fishing. It's not enough to help you live on the land for a month.

Wire: It's there. There are situation where it would be handy. I just don't see it as the go to item in this kit, unless your emergency becomes extended. Then, it could serve you well with a little more advanced skills.

Lanyard: In situations where you are using this kit, make sure you have the lanyard attached and in use. You don't want to lose this.

----------

I returned this kit for several reasons.

First, the plastic latch had a small break. Every time I opened it , the latch would pop off. Very annoying. While secure, it did work, so no worries about losing the seal on the watertight compartment. However, I don't want to be searching for that latch when it pops off every time.

Second, I decided to build my own kit. I know what I need and want. I know that the tools I want need to be more robust. Furthermore, I want to be able to live off the land if need be. My kit does just that. My kit also costs far, far more than this, and fills up an entire medium-sized backpack.

Third, for me, I live and breathe tactical. I wanted a kit that could serve both as an emergency survival kit that gets me by until I'm found, and for the unlikely doomsday scenario, provides the tactical means to remain out of sight and out of mind. I like things that can serve more than one function.

If you are like me, this kit is not worth the money. However, it's not to say it is a bad kit. It needs to fit the right person for the right situation, and it in that case, it is a great item.

Altogether a wonderful bit of kit. We keep it in our Get-home-bag in our minivan. Once you remove and attach the lanyard, there's enough room to put a SE MT908 11 Function Credit Card Size Survival Pocket Tool inside.

When one SERIOUSLY considers the usefulness of fishing hooks in an urban or even a wilderness setting, one can forthrightly suggest replacing them with something more relevant. If you truly live near fish that you can actually catch, there are other kits more suitable. Other than suturing wounds (with barbed hooks? Pitiful sight, that) I can't imagine anyone in the 'hood making practical use of them. Virtual Skyhooks may be a possibility. ;-)

There are some YouTube videos about "always carry" kits created by certified obsessive-compulsive folks that will simply AMAZE you as to what you can stuff into a mint tin. Have fun; go saunter about over there and see what you discover.
