Healthsmart 18-935-000 Digiscan Multi-function Infrared Thermometer

Healthsmart 18-935-000 Digiscan Multi-function Infrared ThermometerCustomer review from the Amazon Vine Program This product may be one of those that people either love or hate, but not like. It is a high-tech thermometer I find very accurate (tested against our pediatrician's thermometer and a Braun)and easy to use. It measures ambient body temperature via ear or forehead (great when the kids are sleeping) and provides very consistent readings. At first, I was skeptical even measured against my Braun. During our next Pediatrician visit, we took it with us. It was tested by both myself and the Nurse Practitioner against their industrial medical thermometer. There was no variation in either the forehead or ear temp. I found the results simply amazing. It also means my Braun (ear only) was accurate as well by the way.

You will need to read the directions (at first) to use this product because it is far more advanced than what many of us are used to. It is not as intuitive as less feature rich products. However, the Healthsmart also measures ambient room temperature very accurately. Additionally, it speaks readings and functions and that does come in handy at times. The readout panel is very easy to read and does not require you to press another button for illumination (like my Braun requires). The product does not have an on/off switch and instead relies on a sleep mode for battery conservation.

The Healthsmart seems ergonomically designed compared to any previous thermometer I have used. This unit does not require use of the pastic disposable covers I seem to never have enough of. Instead, they recommend you clean it after use. No big deal really and in my opinion, a far better option than the plastic covers. Some have complained of no included storage pouch. I have never purchased a thermometer that include storage. It may be worth noting that the Healthsmart seems less durable than my Braun. however, that may be do to the flat design, which I find appealing and easier to handle.

REGARDING CLAIMS OF INNACURACY Like I said earlier, you must read the directions when you first use the Healthsmart. There is a cover on the sensor that pulls off when you want to take an ear reading. It stays on to perform a forehead reading. If you leave the cover on and take an ear reading, the results will be innacurate.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program I wanted to try out a forehead thermometer, so I ordered this one because of the good feature set. I find it to be simple to use, a bit complicated to setup, and having only average accuracy when used on the forehead, but good accuracy when used in the ear.

Design

It is a bit clunky looking to my eyes, although it does fit fine in the hand. The device has a cone shaped area, where the temperature sensor is located, with a snap on lid (snap on for forehead, remove for ear). There is a "MEM" button that is used to turn on the thermometer and enter setup mode, a "TALK" button that is used to toggle settings and request a readout of time and room temperature, plus a measurement button that also contains a "fever" LED.

Features:

Voice readout (can be disabled). Multiple languages are supported, including English (default), Spanish, French, and Italian. There were a couple of other languages as well, but I could not figure out the two letter meanings, so I don't know what other languages are supported.

Memory feature remembers last several temperatures, including date and time.

Will measure the room temperature. This seems a bit overkill, but I suppose it is useful.

Ear or forehead use. There is a removable cover that snaps off for ear use.

Features date and time this is nice when observing trends of the memory function.

Temperature LED turns red if temperature is above 99.6 degrees (meaning a fever).

Powered by 3 AAA batteries

Use:

It takes only about 2 seconds to record forehead temperature. It seems to run about 1 degree low when compared to an oral thermometer, although ear measurements appeared to be accurate. Overall, it is simple to use; however it is a bit complicated to set up for first use. I should note here that there is an extensive list of recommended uses, which looked to me to be a list of conditions under which the thermometer might read the wrong temperatures. I think the list is accurate, and it does serve as a reminder that when a person comes in from the outside or from swimming (for example), their forehead is likely to be a bit colder than body temperature.

Disadvantages:

No ear covers, so one is expected to clean the sensor with alcohol and ear swabs between uses. This is not as convenient as some other models that have the disposable covers, but it may mean better temperatures.

There was a strange instruction for first time use "condition the thermometer for 30 minutes in measurement site". I finally figured out that this means to bring the thermometer to room temperature before use.

One has to hold the measurement button while the temperature is being taken. Other thermometers require only a single button, and then let go. This is somewhat compensated by the quick measurement time.

Voice readout is a bit loud, especially when taking the ear temperature. I put a piece of scotch tape over it, and it is still quite audible.

The clock setting and a few other options, plus the complicated readout, mean that one really does need to keep the user manual handy. This is not a basic model!

Summary:

Recommended for use with the ear canal, and perhaps with the forehead if the temperatures are always consistent (one can add to get the right temperature). The speed of measurement is really great, especially when taking a child's temperature.

I bought this for the ear thermometer only. Some complained about the forehead scan not working. As a nurse, digital thermometers are hard to keep under a toddlers arm. I wanted an ear thermometer at a good price. This is small, easy to use and accurate.

The people that have left negative reviews for this item obviously didn't read the directions because it works perfectly fine! Only use the attachment for an accurate reading when taking a temperature on the forehead...when taking a temperature in the ear, remove the attachment!! If you do this it will work flawlessly!!

Some people think they can just take something out of the box and use it without reading the directions...read people!

Does a great job after becoming accustomed to use. Ear cover difficult to remove. Only used for testing purposes to compare ear and forehead readings. Very sensitive to variations. Nice extra measures room temps. Battery use seems minimal. Used it a lot after receipt. Not so much now. Nice to monitor temps while child sleeps. Very reassuring to wife and oh yes, me too.
