SAM Medical Splint

SAM splints are a technological wonder.

As a ski patroller I carry two of these in my pack and they work incredibly well. It folds out to be pretty long, probably 3 1/2 feet total, but I've rarely used the entire length and normally double it up for strength reasons. These splints are incredibly useful and LIGHT! They also fold into a triangle really well and once you curve the splint, it stiffens right up. When the splint is flat like how you see in the picture, it's easy to fold and manipulate. Once you curve the long edge of it, like if you were to make a long tunnel for a matchbox car, then the splint becomes super stiff. It works just as good in the cold as it does the heat, and if you need to wrap tape around it, it sticks well even in the cold. It's a great accessory to have in a medical bag that weighs pretty much nothing.

Excellent for packing trips. One splint weighs 4.6 oz, so it has minimal impact on your load. It is very malleable, but holds its shape when needed. The outer covering is a foam, and the inside is aluminum. I highly recommend that you bring at least one on avery excursion where 911 access or EMS is more than a few hours away. Don't forget the triangular bandages!
