Abreva Abreva Cold Sore/Fever Blister Treatment
I hate cold sores. I HATE them. I hate them with such unbridled fury and passion that if I were to be judged at the time of my death, and the subject of my blistering hatred came up(no pun intended), Heaven wouldn't want me, and Hell would just plain fear me. But after so many years of putting up with this plague, there is a solution.I usually get fever sores(cold sores) about 8-10 times a year. Usually every 2 months, I get a new outbreak around my lips. It could be a minor outbreak, with a simple little bump on the upper or lower lip, or a grotesque outbreak cluster of about 4-7 sores at once. Usually, these sores last 1-2 weeks, sometimes longer. The day I discovered Abreva, that all changed.
As it states, Abreva cuts down the duration of cold sores quite dramatically. If you manage to detect a cold sore as it just begins to form (usually indicated by a burning or tingling sensation on the lip area), application of Abreva will possibly event prevent the outbreak entirely. Upon a breakout of sores, I find that consistent application cuts the duration of sores from 1-2 weeks to a mere 1-3 days! Don't beleive the utterly ridiculous accusations that Abreva is a placebo...this stuff works, and it works well.
Aside from cutting down the duration of the sore, Abreva also releives any burning and itching you may get from them, so after a while you may not even realize that they're there. The cream is comfortable, and it doesn't sting, burn or itch after application. Though the white cream leaves a film after application, if you rub it in strongly the film disappears. Though the box recommends 4 applications a day, I usually double that to 8, and up to 10 times a day for those particularly brutal outbreaks.
There are some disadvantages to Abreva, and perhaps the greatest of all: the price!
Amazon.com, bless them, has this item listed at 13.99...try finding Abreva at that price anywhere else and you're in for a shocker...it usually goes for $18 on average, and we're talking a VERY small tube here. Don't let the size of the box fool you, the actual tube is less than half the size of my pinky finger! So in short, the cream is a marvel, but the price is simply outrageous. If you are plagued with cold sores on a routine basis, then its worth the price. If not, then I can't justify spending $18 on Abreva if you only get cold sores once in a blue moon. But like I said, thank you Amazon for the much cheaper price!
Another disadvantage is that the tube tends to leak. Upon opening the tube for the first time, the cream tends to stat pushing itself out. When you open the tube for next use, you may find that alot of the cream has been squished into the cap, and that more of it will push out immediately upon the cap being removed. This leads to a lot of waste of the product.
Another disadvantage is that the cream is virtually ineffective at treating cold sores that appear on the underside of the lip closer to the inside of your mouth, mainly because you'll end up inadvertantly licking the cream off or it will get washed away by your saliva.
Finally, the cream dries your lips up quite alot...I would recommend using chapstick to moisturize your lips while using Abreva, because they will become very dry and chapped with continued usage.
Overall, Abreva is one of the greatest things to happen to us cold sore slaves ever. Herpicin-L is utterly useless, Campophenique does little more than burn, dry out and taste awful, and chapstick only exacerbates the sore. Abreva is the way to go. If you can justify shelling out the cash for Abreva, then by all means, do it. Those of us that get multiple outbreaks a year will love it. Others who rarely get them needn't apply, unless the breakout is particularly brutal.
First, sun exposure is her #1 trigger for an outbreak. Lip balm with SPF 15 has SIGNIFICANTLY reduced the number of outbreaks. Chapped lips also trigger an outbreak, so a quality lip balm (other than Carmex) again works well.
Second, there is a product called Viroxyn that works better than Abreva. The active ingredient is .13% benzalkonium chloride. The same active ingredient is also found in Bactine. Viroxyn is $10 per dose, and generic versions of Bactine are very inexpensive. Both my wife and I have used Bactine for our last couple of outbreaks, and we believe we have found the next-best thing to a cure. If you have success with Abreva, then you know that catching the cold sore early in its development is key. Same goes for our Bactine treatment. At first tingle, we saturate a q-tip with Bactine and rub the spot firmly for about 2 minutes. Repeat 4-6 times the first day. We find that the growth stops quickly, and the remaining (tiny) sore heals in a couple of days. If we catch it fast enough, it doesn't even scab over. I am not a doctor, and I am not qualified to give medical advice. I am sharing my personal experience in hopes that you can also find a way to reduce the pain and embarrasment from cold sores. Always follow label instructions for OTC medications.

Without even excusing yourself to visit the loo, apply it during that power business lunch if you have to. In my experience over the last year and a half, the ointment stops cold the development of the blister. It's effective stuff.
Now, I realize that my endorsement here is purely anecdotal and not based on any scientific study I've done on a pork-barrel government grant. But, hey, what have you got to lose? Especially if you're discovering, as I did, that two-headed rattlesnakes are becoming easier to find than virgins, and those Third World back alleys are being bulldozed for McDonald's franchises.

I am a dentist who sees a lot of people with cold sores, which is reactivation of the Herpes virus. The cold sore is the virus replicating usually as a result of some sort of stress that decreases one's the immune system.Abbreva has been shown in clinical studies to be effective, but the key with this treatment or any other for that matter is to start when you first feel the tingling of another cold sore coming on. If you wait and the cold sore erupts, virtually nothing will relieve it except time and your own immune response. Coban is the original excellent-performance self-adherent wrap for holding gauze pads, finger splints, broken toes and so on. The big deal was that coban stuck to itself but not at all to hair, skin, scabs, etc. After the 3M patent ran out (I guess) all sorts of cheap knockoffs showed up in drug stores. These knockoffs are high priced and come unstuck. And coban disappeared from the shelves. I could not find any in my whole city of 1 million.So I ordered way, way more than I needed, 30 rolls, for 30 dollars. It's the real stuff, works perfect. However it takes a really long time, 24 hours prep and 8 hours on my hair. So after a few months I decided to try boxed color again. This time I bought preference Lightest Auburn and not only did it turn out exactly like the color on the box, but it even dyed the damaged part and my gray hairs. Lots of folks make up their own first aid kits or buy them premade, and includesteri strips for wound closure. Anyone trying to actually use them without Tinture of Benzoin as a means of keeping the strips attached to the skin, will find that they will not adhere. So, folks, Tincture of Benzoin is an essential item, unless you intend to suture the would closed, or use a surgical staple gun, because the steri strips you've been carrying won't work without it. Don't learn the hard way, this is a very inexpensive item to add to any kit.
I am attaching a photo that shows an open container of the benzoin tincture (photo can be located by following 'customer photos' link under the main photo). The content is a dark brown thick liquid that hardens a bit as it dries. A small hole in the cap allows you to dispense a small amounts. The liquid does stain if you spill it as I found out the first time I applied it to my toe. Now I put something under my foot as I apply the compound.
Overall, using it on my toe every day made me more comfortable and I recommend it.

Does what it's supposed to: makes your skin sticky as h e double toothpicks. I use it when I need to keep compression running gear in place on my legs during a long, sweaty race. Just put a little of this on a swab, make a few lines (it's brown, so easy to see) across the thigh, ankle, calf, or wherever, and wait a minute for it to dry. Your compression gear won't move. I also use it for its more normal use of pre treating areas that are going to get athletic tape or bandages. This stuff plus a 3M waterproof bandage means 3 days without a bandage change, even if you sweat like a sprinkler.

I wish I read reviews b/f I used this product.... It is completely awful and damaged my hair beyond repair. It is so damaged and fried that it won't even dry. I am left with an entire head of clumps of hair that look like fried wet cotton balls. I have cut as much as I can off it however, it is damaged less from a 1/4 inch from the roots and downward.If that wasn't bad enough, it stripped my blonde hair and I have streaks of copper and orange from a color change.
I bet pure BLEACH and Gasoline would have done less damage than this did to my hair.

Please do youself and your hair a favor and DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT! I have no idea where these people came from that gave such great reviews, but my experience was horrible and so was my daughter's, as well as 2 other friends who tried this product. OMG my hair is RAVAGED! The texture is awful, it is extrememly dry, it is not sleek ad smooth at all. It looks and feels like crap. Drying time is not reduced and you still have to use your normal products that you use when you straighten your hair and you still have to use a straightening iron. This product is a complete waste of money and an utter failure.
I used the product as instructed. Washed, but didn't condition my hair and then applied the "20 Minute Serum." The serum stinks!! It smells just like a perm or relaxer, only stronger! I rinsed it out after 20 minutes without shampooing or conditioning as instructed. My hair felt totally damaged at this point. As soon as I rinsed the serum I could tell an absolute and total change in the texture of my hair and it was not good at all! It was almost impossible to comb out, so I added in some of the 2nd step cream hoping it would make a difference and make it easier to comb out. It did. At first I thought "Ah, that's much better" because it did actually make a difference my hair felt much better and I could comb through it now. My hair also smelled much better after applying the 2nd step cream, thank goodness! Well, as soon as I started blow drying my hair I could tell the damage was still totally present.
I had so much broken hair and hair falling out it wasn't even funny. I was really really p*ssed off. My hair is long almost to my butt, wavy and very healthy. I have done perms in the past and even chemical/permanent straighteners and I have never ever experienced this much damage and my hair has never felt this bad!
The instructions say to blow dry your hair straight and then use a straightening iron to get it totally straight. Well that right there defeats the purpose of the product! Anyway, I did this as instructed without using any of my other usual products. Ugh, it was horrible. I decided to use one of my favorite products for straightening my hair in hopes that I could get better results. I used Matrix Gold Heat spray which normally makes my hair so silky soft and smooth. Well not this time! My hair feels almost frizzy.. like each individual strand seems damaged. It is so dry. I have these little 1-2 inch pieces of broken hair that stick up everywhere now. I have fly aways like crazy. I am so mad right now just thinking about it! My Gold Heat helped a little, but not much. My hair still feels horrible. Also, as I was straightening with the iron, some sort of gunky build up was accruing on the plates of my iron. Of course my hair would stick to it and break off. I had to scrub it off of the plates. I have never had that happen with any other hair products! This Garnier has been a total nightmare. I soo wish I never tried it! My hair feels over processed, rough, dry and generally awful. I know several people who have tried this product and they all had the same results. That is too much of a coincidence. This product is totally pointless. It is supposed to cut drying time, smooth your hair, make it sleeker and straighten it. Umm, if you still have to use a straightening iron and your usual products, why bother to spend MORE on the Garnier and add yet another product?? Omgosh I am soo upset with this!
I am going to follow up with a good conditioning treatment (Pureology brand) and I guess I will have to go for a trim now too to get the dry dead ends off. Have I mentioned how mad this product has me?! Ughhhhh!
UPDATE 10/21/2010 It is now OVER A MONTH since using this product and my hair is still NOT back to normal. Despite using various deep conditioning treatments which were expensive and time consuming, I am still experiencing alot of breakage daily. My hair is still dry and the curl/waves have not yet come back to the way they were before using this product. Several nights I have shampooed and then applied conditioner and left it in my hair overnight and rinsed it in the morning. I believe that until my hair fully grows out, it is going to be in horrid condition. It is so upsetting. It took me YEARS to grow my hair this long and I have always received many compliments on it. Amazing how one product can ruin all that! I mean, this is my hair, a part of me, part of my identity. So very upsetting. This product needs pulled from the shelves. Even after getting my hair trimmed, it is only a matter of days until my ends are back in horrible shape again and that is not how my hair was previously. I now have "thin" hair since it keeps breaking off and falling out every day. I am afraid one day I will end up bald. This is ridiculous. I'd love to know how they tested this product before placing it on the shelves and selling it to the public. How could they not know this would happen??
Please, please do not try this product.
UPDATE 1/23/2011 So it is now January and my curls are back to normal FINALLY! My hair is still dry though. I have to keep using heavy conditioners, leave in conditioners and conditioning treatments. I still experience ALOT of breakage as well. I am happy that my curls did finally return to normal for the most part, but I am disappointed that my hair is still so darn dry. I guess I will have to keep getting it cut more often in order to get ALL the hair cut off that had the product on it. My new growth seems to be ok, but all else is drier than it has ever been. Ugh, one day it will be back to normal, I suppose.

I use this product for myself and for my dogs. I always like to keep at least two rolls on hand, so getting a pack of four on Amazon was great (the price was better here than buying them individually at the drug store or at other online stores). The product packaging was good, and the product arrived in good shape, ready to use. This tape is great to apply to dressings that you don't want to get wet if applied correctly, it keeps the dressing under it completely dry. I have tried some off-brand products, but they don't stick as well as this tape.I bought this particular batch after my dog got a cut on her pad, and I had to bandage it daily for four weeks. This product was literally a life saver as she couldn't get the wound wet and even in the rain it kept the water off the dressing and her wound. I applied six strips over the dressing on her paw and it worked well to keep the water out. I would definitely buy again.
Overall worth it.

Technically that really stinks. However the glass quality and magnification clarity were excellent and entirely defect free. Compared to my UltraOptix which has a plastic lens, decent clarity and all sorts lens refraction issues, these glass lenses are far superior.
For the price you can't really complain as the overall quality is pretty good. However the magnification is just weak. I will now be looking for a true 4xPower, 3in or wider glass magnifying lens to suit my tastes.
As for this set, I find the medium sized 3xPower magnifying glass to be decent. The rest will be given away. So one decent glass lens magnifier for the asking price. Barely, barely worth it.

Super quality, so glad I found them. So much junk ou there, hand held microscopes are a bad joke. Cheap magnifying lenses that cost more than these are so frustrating. These glasses are just the best.The thin metal casing around the glass of the lens arrived bent. I purchased these for my mom who has macular degeneration. She was very pleased with these. She can read her paper and Bible using the 10x. She hasn't been able to do this for a while. What a cool little first aid kit. I love the fact that it is has a compact size that can easily fit in most places. I have purchased several of these and given a lot of these as gifts. They fit well in purses, a vehicle's glove compartment or trunk, gym bags, back packs, baby bags. They can also be stored conveniently in kitchen cabinets and drawers, office drawers, bathrooms, travel bags and suit cases, lockers, laundry rooms, garages and many more places. I love being able to have a few of these stored throughout my home and vehicles. When someone gets hurt, whether its me or others, especially kids, it is nice to be able to quickly grab this little kit. We are frequently around kids for athletic events, school activities and have found that the quicker a band-aid can be placed on a scrap, cut or other boo-boo, the faster it calms a child down as well as other kids and adults that may be around. I wish it has some bacterial ointment; however, it does have some alcohol pads to kill germs. I also like that it has its own case that securely fastens to help prevent its contents from getting ruined. So while this kit is not comprehensive (and is not meant to be), it does have very basic items to treat minor injuries.
