I have used various brands of vinyl gloves for years. Some are too thin, my only problem I have encountered. These gloves are stiff, don't seem thin, but are a more clear material than most vinyl gloves I have seen.

Pocket BVM (Bag Valve Mask)

This is a nice bag valve mask, and wonderfully compact. It fits nicely even in a medium sized first aid kit. Great if you're in the field and advanced help is not at hand.

2 things to be aware of:

1. It's tricky to get it back in the case. Not an issue if you use it , since you would throw it away, but if you examine it decide if you want more on hand...

2. I am an anesthesiologist and use bag valve masks every day, on real patients. You need training and familiarity to use them properly. Lift the patient's face into the mask, don't just mash the mask down onto their face. If you buy this, my advice would be to seek out some advanced training, if you don't have such already.

I'm a paramedic for the past 36 years and go through a lot of gear. As times have changed, rigs have gone from big boxes to vans and space is a premium. I bought two of these so I could save smoe space in the first in bags. I've used one already and it's a great BVM. Add to that the fact that it stores in half the space and it's worth every penny.

The second thing is with the portability and small size you give up volume that would help the patient with their respiration. Adventure Medical Kits Oral Rehydration Salts

This is the older formula that the World Health replaced with a lower osmolarity version over a decade ago. You can buy the newer packets anywhere around the world for less than $.50, but apparently not in the US. Neither formula is flavored, so kids resist drinking, but the newer formula is a bit more tolerable. The product is for treating dehydration (such as due to diarrhea and vomiting, and maybe copious sweating); it has nothing to do with water purification -in case the tags suggest otherwise.

Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) by Adventure Medical Kits is used for severe dehydration due to diarrhea, vomiting, and/or excessive sweat loss. Being that I live in the desert and do a lot of hiking and camping I carry oral rehydration salts due to the possibility of excessive sweat loss or vomiting from heat exhaustion. It is also a good addition to your emergency first aid kit if your vehicle breaks down in a remote area and there is no shade or protection from the sun. Athletes such as marathoners, ultra runners, and endurance athletes can also benefit from oral rehydration salts. ORS contain important electrolytes to enhance the body's ability to quickly absorb fluids. ORS is a good electrolyte replacement drink to prevent or treat dehydration, hyponatremia (water intoxication), heat illness (nausea, vomiting), and muscle cramping.

Use ORS for recovery from heat illnesses and/or diarrhea:

1. Add the entire contents of one powder packet to enough drinking water to make one quart (32 ounces) of solution

2. Shake the container until all the powder is dissolved

3. Drink one liter ORS over four hours

4. Do not add more water to the solution after it is mixed

5. Do not boil the solution

6. Make and use a fresh solution each day

Excessive water intake without proper electrolyte intake can lead to hyponatremia which refers to a lower than normal level of sodium in the blood. Hyponatremia is sometimes referred to as "water intoxication," especially when it is due to the consumption of excess water, for example during strenuous exercise, without adequate replacement of sodium. Hyponatremia can also result when sodium is lost from the body or when both sodium and fluids are lost from the body during prolonged sweating and severe vomiting or diarrhea. The proper use of Oral Rehydration Salts can prevent hyponatremia which can lead to death.

These Oral Rehydration Salts contain the original oral rehydration mix created by the World Health Organization (WHO) to combat severe diarrhea from cholera. There is now a reduced-osmolarity formulation available but according to the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) in 2004 in an article titled, "Clinical Concerns About Reduced-Osmolarity Oral Rehydration Solution" it states:

"the reduced-osmolarity formulation is particularly unsuitable for universal use because it contains an amount of sodium insufficient to maintain sodium balance in cholera patients, in whom its use induces negative sodium balance and may lead to hyponatremia,..."

While some people see a controversy between the original formulation and the reduced-osmolarity formulation I am confident in this original formulation (although I would not be using it as a result of cholera). Whether your severe dehydration is due to a heat related illness or diarrhea due to drinking unsafe water with bacteria or a virus it is always a good policy to get examined by a qualified health care provider for an accurate diagnosis and proper treatment.

Every family should have some packets of Oral Rehydration Salts around, for when diarrhea eventually hits. Pedialyte and store knockoffs have too low sodium and too high osmolarity, and kids hate the taste. I chart my cycles (using a BBT), so I knew exactly when I had ovulated. Since my chart turned triphasic about 7 days after ovulation, I had an inkling I could be pregnant. I had a bunch of cheap internet HPTs that promised to detect down to 10 miu of hCG (that's extremely sensitive -even the ones that tend to be considered very sensitive are usually around 20 miu or more). At 10 days past ovulation (5 days before my period was expected), I finally got an extremely faint line on a 10 miu test (so faint I wasn't even entirely certain I was seeing it).

I decided to pick up a digital to see if I could confirm. My research pointed me to the First Response Digital Gold as being the most sensitive digital test out there. Given my extremely faint line, I assumed the digital would be negative (since it appears to detect at 18 miu, which is less sensitive than the stick I used earlier). I held my urine for about 5 hours (after my original positive test in the morning), and did not eat or drink much during that time, so that my urine would be nice and concentrated for better results.

Testing with the First Response Digital Gold was easy. As soon as you remove it from the package, it activates (don't remove it until you're ready to test!) You can either aim it into your urine stream, or pee into a cup and dip the stick. I chose to pee in a cup and dip. The little icon on the screen began flashing a few seconds later to indicate that it was working. And within 3 minutes, I had an unquestionable "yes+"!

I loved that I was able to place the cap over the wick, so I could put the test in my purse without fear of getting urine all over. The package warns that the test will need to be thrown out after 30 minutes, and the digital display will stop working. However, the battery lasted about 5 days for me. It was exciting being able to show my husband the "yes+" later that evening.

I was using cheap pee-stick pregnancy tests from here on Amazon, because I like to start testing really early, and that was ok.

By the time we got to the day before my period, those showed a very light line, which my husband agreed he could see, but he wasn't convinced that a very light positive result was really a positive result.

So, we bought a pack of these for about $15 at Walmart, because we wanted something digital. I was a little nervous about using it, because I didn't want to accidentally get the plastic part wet, so I used a dixie cup, and that worked fine.

The little clock thing started going, and my husband and I watched....YES+! It was nice to get a clear result that we could both agree on.

I kind of like how this test has a plastic cover for the end. We took our positive test to show his parents, and that would be awkward and gross without the plastic cover, but with the plastic cover it seemed totally fine. His mom understood right away what it was, and she was excited. His dad said, "Oh, what's that, a thermometer?" "No....well...kind of...but, no..." "Oh! It's a glucometer!" *we all grinned* "Nope!" "OH!! I know!! Congratulations!" So, that was pretty funny.)

I had nothing to go on but a gut feeling, simple math, and some slight symptoms that could've been early menstrual symptoms, but I went to the pharmacy and asked which test was most accurate for detecting pregnancy early. The female pharmacist was adamant about this one, and I liked the yes or no feature, so I bought it. Ten minutes later I got a positive, three days before my period was due. Nine months later my son was born. :-) The result remained displayed on the screen for a few days, btw, not just a couple of hours, and the urine collection strip is removable (so you can take it out, clean the stick and show it to your hubby or best friend or your mom later if you want). I highly recommend!

I do not, however, recommend ANY early detection urine test if you've recently had a miscarriage or given birth. These tests are designed to pick up on miniscule amounts of hcg running through your system that a doctor might correctly read as a negative in a blood test. Which means they might also detect a chemical pregnancy, and only a doctor reading your blood test can tell you for certain if it's a progressing pregnancy or a chemical one. Always get a blood test to confirm.

Update (Sept. 2012): I used this brand again recently...the first test in the box came back negative. And it was correct (though I was hoping it was wrong). Two months later, I used the second stick (three days early again). Positive! I'm now 5 months pregnant with my second. So far this brand has been right every time!

Earth Mama Angel Baby C-Mama Healing Salve, 1-Ounce

First, yes, this is a tiny jar, but a little goes a VERY LONG WAY. It is suggested that you use it 2-3 times a day, and I will admit I used it 1-2 times a day. One jar lasted me approx. 6-8 weeks. Oh, and I was using it on an existing scar and my face in addition to my new c-section scar. I bought a jar for my mother to use on some sever scars on her face which she used 2-3 times a day on her entire face it lasted her over 4 months.

So anyways....

I found this salve after my second delivery, both were c-sections due to complications. I began applying it as soon as the wound was exposed and found that it burned a little so I waited about a week and reapplied with no burning or irritation. With my second surgery, the skin was folded and over lapped and I feared how awful it would look once completely healed. After a couple of months of using this my scar was looking fantastic! I can now honestly say the second scar is smaller then the first one.

Being that it worked so well on my c-section scar I decided to try it on a 20 year old scar on my neck that was completely ghastly! I ended up being allergic to the thread used, causing an awful infection and having to have the incision redone, all of which left a very large, thick scar that sat very noticeable above the skin. The results were not as fantastic as my c-section, however, there was a very noticeable difference. This salve helped to break down the scar tissue and the scar now sits more flush to the rest of my skin. Although there is a remarkable difference, I was kind of hoping for miracles after seeing what it did to my other scar. Not saying that this salve didn't do what I wanted, as it worked far better that Madermia, but rather one should have realistic expectations.

And as a side note, I tried using this for acne scars and saw some difference with that as well. My skin looked more nourished and hydrated causing the skin to look fuller and decreasing the appearance of the acne scars. It also did wonders with my fine wrinkles which was an added bonus. Although, it should be mentioned that this item contains a fair amount of vit. c and there for when using this, sunscreen should be applied anywhere this is being used or else it will cause dark spots on the skin.

More side notes, it can leave your skin feeling a little oily, especially if you use too much. This really needs to be used sparingly, and I do mean sparingly. I would barely dip my finger into the jar and it would be enough for my c-section, neck, and might even be enough left over for around my eyes.

Over all, I completely love this salve! I am pregnant with my third child and the doctor has already told me that I will have to have another c-section so I am returning to start stocking up on this awesome salve.

UPDATE I went in for my third c-section and a nurse was completely amazed by how tiny my scar was. She kept asking me, "This is your third?" Then she called all the other nurses and doctors over so they too could see my scar. When I told them it was from using this salve, they all went flocking for pens and paper to write down the name.

It should also be noted that I used this for approx. 6-7 months. It takes the skin several months to completely heal so one should not expect this to work overnight.

I've had two c-section so was excited to try this product when I saw the good reviews. It's expensive but I figured if it worked I deserved it after being cut open twice. However the salve is very hard and it's difficult to get any real amount on your fingers to apply. My scar is still in the very sensitive time where it feels creepy to touch it too much. I prefer using other creams that are soft and I can just goop a bunch on without having to rub so much. Maybe it works great, I'm not sure. I don't think I'll have the opportunity to find out since I have trouble applying it.
