For minor cuts, scratches, etc., many people (WRONGLY!) swear by such antiseptics as isopropyl alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, and even the oldie, merthiolate. TV ads hawk topical antibiotics as the way to go for such injuries.
As a microbiologist, I can tell with that the ABSOLUTE BEST antiseptic is plain old TINCTURE OF IODINE!!!! Why is iodine superior to those others? For one, iodine has a broader and wider spectrum of activity against more potential pathogenic bacteria AND FUNGI than do alcohol and peroxide. Overuse of antibiotics can lead to antibiotic resistance on the part of such microbes. Iodine affects most bacteria, fungi, and yeasts, so there is no danger of an "overgrowth" infection from its use or continued use (growth of resistant organisms when susceptible organisms have been killed off, leaving space for the overgrowth or opportunistic invaders). Keep a bottle of iodine in your medicine cabinet, one in your pocket, and one in your car! It's the best all-purpose antiseptic around....and it is inexpensive, too!
