I swear by this stuff. I have horrible teeth but when a tooth starts hurting I reach for this. Soak a cotton pellet, push it into the cavity and try to leave it there as long as you can without letting to much saliva come into contact with it. That will spread the oil around and can be a bit uncomfortable. Despite the unpleasant feeling the oil gives the relief is more than worth it and it lasts longer than other numbing gels.
After a minute or two it will numb the pain enough so as to be tolerable. I've carried one of these with me for years. After my local store stopped carrying it I've taken to buying it here. Had a relative tell me that if you use this long enough it kills the nerve in the tooth so that you no longer will feel toothaches where its used. Don't know if that's true or not but I haven't had any for a few years now even though my teeth look like the backside of the moon.

I had two teeth pulled and ended up with dry socket on both. It was so painful I was taking Ibuprofen and Lora-tabs like candy. The Lora-tabs were knocking me out, and I read good reviews on this so decided to try it. I bought it at CVS for $8 because it was a weekend and I couldn't wait for it to be shipped to me. But this is a much better price! I rinsed my mouth with salt water first to flush out the sockets. The initial taste is horrible. After you soak the little cotton ball in the oil, using the tweezers, touch it to a tissue to absorb some of the oil so it's not so bad. Use the tweezers to stuff the little cotton ball down in the socket. Your mouth will start producing lots of saliva. Hold a cup under your mouth and let the saliva drain into the cup. Do not swallow it or it may make you sick. After a few minutes I swished around a little water to clear out the rest of the oil and left the cotton balls in place. I replace them when I eat, so that I don't accidentally swallow them. But they cover and protect the dry socket, and no pain at all. Beats having to take pain meds!

I am currently dealing with one of the worst toothaches I've ever had and I've had bad ones before, believe me (for example, an infected tooth that had to have a root canal). Anyway, my current ache is too much for the numbing gels like Anbesol or Orajel. The active ingredient of these numbing gels is benzocaine (20%). They work OK, but only for a short while: in my experience the numbing lasts for only 20-30 minutes. I then re-apply it, and after 10 minutes or so the numbing kicks in but now you're in this cycle of constantly apply numbing gels, and you're only pain free about 60% of the time. And, you're only supposed to use the numbing gels 4 times a day. Yet, to remain mostly pain free, I'd need to use the gel 40 times a day! And, benzocaine does have some potential side effects (see wikipedia entry on this), so using it 10 times more often than recommended is probably not a good idea.
Fortunately, I found out about the Red Cross toothache kit. It's active ingredient is Eugnenol (85%), which is extracted from Clove oil. (NOTE: there is a red cross kit that uses benzocaine, so make sure you're buying the right thing). Eugenol also has potential side effects if overused, but the good news is, you don't have to over use it at least, I haven't had to. Using it 4 times per day has been enough to manage my pain (so much so I'm taking the time to write this review!). You soak a cotton ball in the eugenol solution, and then hold the soak cotton ball against the offending tooth, with the provided tweezers, for 1 minute. It can hurt for a few minutes after you apply it, until the numbing occurs, but then it remains numb for a much longer time than with the numbing gels. For hours! Here's a tip: to minimize the hurting that happens when you apply it your tooth, use the numbing gels first.
I can't recommend this product highly enough it is making my 3 day wait to see the dentist bearable.
