IPOK (Individual Patrol Officer's Kit)

IPOKThe IPOK (Individual Patrol Officer's Kit) by North American Rescue is a necessary kit for all law enforcement officers or anyone who engages in an activity that may result in significant hemorrhaging.

The IPOK contains the following items:

2 Black Talon Nitrile Trauma Gloves (1 pair of gloves)

1 C-A-T (Combat Application Tourniquet)

1 S-Rolled Gauze

1 4 in. Emergency Trauma Dressing

I will review each component of the kit.

-Black Talon Nitrile Trauma Gloves:

Excellent gloves that are strong and durable to protect against Bloodborne pathogens such as hepatitis or HIV/AIDS. I do recommend having a minimum of two pairs of gloves in case one of the gloves tears or you need to treat multiple individuals. These gloves are strong but still capable of becoming damaged. Carry an extra set of gloves.

-Combat Application Tourniquet:

The Combat Application Tourniquet, C-A-T, is a critical component of this kit. The C-A-T Tourniquet has been researched and proven to be effective. When faced with a catastrophic injury to an arm or leg from a traumatic event with significant arterial bleeding then this tourniquet is a reliable and necessary piece of gear that has saved many lives. This tourniquet is fast and easy to apply one handed, under stressful conditions, and is combat proven on the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan. Time is of the essence when faced with a serious injury with significant bleeding requiring immediate and effective control of bleeding. This tourniquet can literally be the difference between life and death.

Based upon research from the United States Army Institute of Surgical Research (USAISR) Battlefield Tourniquet Recommendations Issued July 28, 2004:

"The Combat Application Tourniquet (C-A-T) was effective 100% of the time in quickly and effectively occluding arterial blood flow in both the upper and lower extremities in all trials...Pain scores (pinching and circumferential) were dramatically lower with the C-A-T than any other strap-style device evaluated."

Research after this 2004 study has come to the same conclusion. Hence, the Combat Application Tourniquet should be a part of any serious first aid kit or medic gear. Get this tourniquet and be prepared for the worst case scenario.

-S-Rolled Gauze:

Comes vacuum sealed and sterilized. The S-rolled gauze is designed it to be utilized in conjunction with a compression bandage such as the 4" ETD to assist in hemorrhage control.

-4 in. Emergency Trauma Dressing:

Comes vacuum sealed and sterilized. The Emergency Trauma Dressing is a sterile non-adherent pad. A durable securing device allows for fast application even under stressful conditions. The dressing can also be used to as a sling and swath to secure splints to an extremity or to perform in any other function requiring an elastic wrap.

While I believe that the IPOK is excellent I also recommend that some additional equipment be added to this kit to provide an even more effective level of aid. Added items include:

Minimum of 1-2 extra sets of Nitrile gloves

An occlusive dressing such as the HyFin® Chest Seal for an open chest wound

A hemostatic agent such as Celox V12090-35 Blood Clotting Solution, 35g Pouch

This kit is also a great kit for firearms instructors, range masters, hunters, campers, and backpackers. The IPOK (Individual Patrol Officer's Kit) by North American Rescue is a highly recommended kit for self-aid or buddy aid. All law enforcment officers should be required to have such a kit that they carry as a normal part of their duty gear.

Small, compact and light weight. One of those products you're glad you have, just hope you never have to use.

3M Micropore 2" Paper Surgical Tape with Dispenser (by the Roll)

3M Micropore 2' Paper Surgical Tape with DispenserI buy this tape because my skin is very sensitive to tapes. This is the only tape I can wear without pulling my skin off while removing. I think this is a good buy. Hope this helps.

I purchased this tape to help correct a young Canary's slip claw, and it works perfect! A tutorial mentioned this brand specifically but I should have gone with the 1" instead. Oh well! I can cut it to the size and shape I need, and it isn't easily soiled so I can leave it on for days at a time before changing it.

adheres well to skin, doesnt feel heavy and sticky on, not hard to remove on intact skin but can be a little more than expected to remove on thin or very sensitive or compromised skin areas

They used this same tape in the hospital after my husbands surgery. So, we ordered this for changing bandages at home. I love that it comes with a cutting mechanism it's a pain to try to use a scissors to cut tape when you're trying to hold 4X4 gause pads in place (I need four hands!!!). So this tape with dispenser works great love it!

Lifeline 29-Piece Essential Survival Can

Lifeline 29-Piece Essential Survival CanThis is probably the best starter survival can out there that doesn't break the bank. The plan is to give out survival water bottles for the holidays, but most of those were filled with cheap and useless items. This had a great assortment of the basics, and the duct tape and fishing items were what sealed the deal for me.

The issues I had were the paper products that were seemingly thrown in to beef up the "29-pieces" side of the product, but those aside this can had pretty much everything a great starter survival can should have.

This is for a 'manly' easter basket so I havent opened it yet, but the can its pretty sturdy. It was more just a novel gift.

Buy Lifeline 29-Piece Essential Survival Can Now

This was part of a Christmas gift for my 'Survivor Man' loving little brother. The can is sturdy and of a good quality, and the packaging is also sturdy and looks "classy." On the back, there is a list of everything in the tin, what it would be most useful for, and a picture of the contents all spread out and easy to see. The contents were just as impressive and well made. The only problem was with the tiny, cheaply made, button compass. But my brother is a survivalist-in-training, so he has plenty of other compasses to replace it with!

Benadryl Itch Stopping Cream, Extra Strength 1 oz (28.3 g)

Benadryl Itch Stopping Cream, Extra Strength 1 ozI love this stuff! It really does the job on bug bites and itchy places. I use it when I get into something out doors that leaves me with a rash and usually within a few minutes the itching stops. It really helps healing since I'm not clawing myself. It is amazingly hard to find in stores so it is great I can find it at Amazon.

In the middle of the night I woke up scratching a mosquito bite and instantly opened up my Amazon App and ordered this. It's a life saver!

This week I got 5+ mosquito and this Benadryl cream was the only thing that made it tolerable.

Stops the itch, east to apply, and not greasy.

infectiguard Hand Sanitizer with Carabiner, 1.8 OunceLove the beaner clip! Clipped it on my bag and used it constantly on my trip to Asia. Does not dry out your hands which I loved.

The small container combined with the carabiner make this the perfect thing to take camping or other outings. My son likes to attach this to his water bottle when he goes camping with the Boy Scouts. They always have to have their water bottles with them so those are usually carabined to a belt loop and the hand sanitizer is perfect for going along in the same manner.

Apex Apex Twice-A-Day Weekly Pill Organzier

Apex Weekly Pill Organizer, Twice-a-Day, 1 Pill OrganizerAlright, these twice daily pill boxes are harder to find than they should be. So you're kind of stuck with whatever you find, but there are good things and bad about this box.

Pros:

Two different colors; makes it harder to mess up your AM and PM.

Durable plastic; have been using it for over a year and no problems.

Large; bigger than you expect, hold many pills including those big ones.

Cons:

Look closely, the PM days go from right to left. This seems backwards to me, it's oppisite of how we read and also from the AM side. This has taken A LOT of getting used to and caused frequent problems. I still forget sometimes.

Writing fades. I guess this happens with every case though.

All that said, I'm still using it because I can't find anything else to acomidate my pills (usually at least 5 each dose, two of which are large). I think at this point if I found one that went the "right" way, I'd probably have an even harder time remembering.

Update:

One of the doors has finally started to fall off. I have it held on now by a couple of pieces of athletic tape. So with daily use, mine lasted about a year and a half.

Works as it should, is roomy and holds a huge number of pills per compartment, even several large ones like vitamins. The lids can be removed for cleaning, the compartments are contoured for easy pill removal.

A drawback for me is the fact that the lids open too easily. Therefore, this is a pill organizer best suited for the countertop at home but not for travel because the contents would be spilled very quickly. Other than that: Good product.

Buy Apex Apex Twice-A-Day Weekly Pill Organzier Now

I bought this pill organizer for traveling and was very disappointed. The closures on each slot are so weak that you have to hold them all closed when you open one, else all the pills come tumbling out. I bought it at WalMart which is an hour away, so of course won't go to the trouble of returning it, but can warn others here.

I own several of these and am ordering more so I can prep vitamins and meds for hubby and I a couple of weeks at a time. None of mine have broken down and my oldest box is several years old, having survived a handful of cross-country trips.

Pros: Roomy enough for my 8 huge supplement pills and several smaller medications in each compartment. Tops pull out for easy loading and washing. Cheerful colors differentiate between morning and evening doses at a glance. Incredible discount and low shipping (fast delivery, too).

Cons: Sometimes the lids do pop open when I travel, but I just slip the pill organizer into a gallon zip bag and fold it over. You could slip a rubber band around it until you reach your destination but the zip bag is fine for me. Almost all pill organizers I've purchased have popped open in my purse so I didn't subtract a star for this.

Want Apex Apex Twice-A-Day Weekly Pill Organzier Discount?

I like this pill container and I'm glad I ignored the negative reviews. The fact that the top comes out makes it easier to fill if you take 10 plus large pills twice a day or have movement issues like I do. Also the night side does read from right to left but if you are taking AM meds then you can look and say I took Wednesday mornings meds and know then that it's time for Wednesday night. I would order it again.

Source Naturals Ultra Colloidal Silver Liquid, 10 ppm

Source Naturals Ultra Colloidal Silver Liquid, 10 ppm, 8 Ounce, Glass BottleI was introduced to this from a lady at whole foods. I couldnt take zinc and eccineica anymore as it upset my stomach. She told me to try it for fighting colds and flu. It worked!! And works every time. I recently thought the cold had gotten me but kept fighting and two days later it was compeltely gone. I have now gone three years without a cold. I take it the MINUTE I feel a scratchy throat or a cold coming on. I swear by it and try to get all of my friends to take it as well. I have the nose sprayer and the drops and they are wonderful.

It works for so much more than fighting colds as well. Earaches, burns, just so much good in this product.

This is the best price I've found for this particular brand of Colloidal Silver liquid. I use it for a lot of things and it is probably the most useful item in my first aid kit. Because it is only 10 ppm and doesn't have any additives, I also feel comfortable using this on my cats.

I work in a hospital and have two kids that attend public schools. The smallest child always had recurring double ear infections, sinus infections, and respiratory infections. I'm a believer in your product, because this was the only thing I've found to clear it all up I put a dropper full in 8 oz of reverse osmosis water, and suddenly I don't have a child that is dependent on antibiotics anymore. It's cost-effective compared to insurance copays, and OTC products that are expensive and don't work but sure hit your pocket book. I can't tell you really how many times I have told people just get some colloidal silver!!! Lest big Pharma prevail and you have your doubts, $10.00 is no harm, no foul. Why forfeit? Love it, guys! Keep up the great work!

PetAlive Ear Dr. - Ear Drops for Pets (30ml)

PetAlive Ear Dr. - Ear Drops for PetsI have a dog (great pyrenees) that is constantly getting ear infections. I was looking for a way to avoid taking him to the office so they can determine what I already knew.

After putting the oil in, unlike the other medicines he did not walk around shaking his head like a crazy dog either, he would shake his head a little bit and then go back to what he was doing. I started to notice results in about 3 days after using the product. I will continue to purchase this product for my ear-infection-prone-dog!!!

Although, with some of the ingredients, even though it says it's safe to use for a cat, I would research before using.

This product has tree tea oil in it which is HIGHLY TOXIC to cats and apparently to dogs too. Just do a google search and you will see lots and lots of information on this subject. It can seriously harm and even kill your cat. Do not use it or any other essential oil on your cat. I have written the company about this issue if they get back to me I will update this review with their feedback. Frankly I now mistrust this company because tea tree oil toxicity in cats is common knowledge so marketing this product as safe for cats is due to ignorance or irresponsibility, either of which does not inspire confidence. Plus their prices are a total rip off.

Here's an account of putting it on a dog.

Maybe you all know this already, but I just learned it the hard way: TEA TREE OIL IS POISONOUS TO DOGS AND CATS. My dog Momo is okay now, but I STUPIDLY put some tea tree oil on his paws and a few hours later, he could not stand up. We rushed to the vet ER and he required IV flushing, activated charcoal, discussion with Poison Control, overnight monitoring, and an extreme bath. I have since researched this online and apparently it is widely known to be toxic -so this is not unique to my dog. SOMETIMES it is used in very diluted amounts in dog shampoo and as a flea or tick repellent; but personally, I would urge you to research it before using it IN ANY AMOUNT. (That is what I should have done!) It is just as dangerous when it is absorbed through the skin as when it is ingested orally and causes NEUROLOGICAL REACTIONS and can cause LIVER DAMAGE. THANK GOD there was a good doctor at the ER that night to make up for my own idiocy. Anyway, I hope this will prevent this from happening to everyone elses pets....Oddly enough, it is not included on any of the lists of things that are toxic to dogs...if we have a list, maybe we should add it....THANK YOU.

My 2 year old spaniel cross had been scratching her ears for months, causing them to be sore and it was making her very bad tempered and also lethargic. I had been researching for a natural remedy as I do not like to use antibiotics etc (and the expense to see the vet!) as most of them cause even more problems. After checking them all out "PetAlive Ear Dr" seemed to be the best one.

I ordered this product and with ONE treatment she stopped scratching her ears! She didn't much like having them put in (but loved the ear massage after) but the change in her within an hour was amazing. No more itchy ears! She wanted to play, had her "happy face" on (tongue lolling, big smile) and you could see she was no longer irritated by her ears itching constantly.

I will keep using it for a week to ensure that her ears are clear and then do a maintenance dose to ensure they stay that way.

A wonderful product that I would recommend to anyone.

I originally posted review 3 days after using it. Now I am on the the second bottle, using it for 3.5 months and wanted update my experience (original review is at the end).

Thanks to this product, my dog's ear infection is almost healed completely now. The biggest difference this product made was to stop producing ear wax right away and all started come out slowly (some were so large that I couldn't even believe). Bad smell from ear (caused by bacteria) is gone and replaced with nice tea tree oil smell. Also the color of ear canal became very healthy looking which I saw for the first time in last 4 years. All these were noticed in the first week.

What I've been fighting still is the built up ear wax to come out completely (still see a little bit left) and after that, it looks like I can stop using it. Now I really feel like seeing a light at the end of the tunnel and can't tell how happy this product made me.

I would recommend reading PetAlive website also which explains how to use this product.

>

I started using this product 3 days ago and already see a big difference. This is amazing and almost gave me tears thinking back what me and my dog had gone through in the last 4 years with his ear infection.

I have a 9 years old German Shepherd and from one incident (which required a minor surgery), he started having abnormal amount of ear wax. Vet suggested and the wax had been removed twice (requires sedation every time which I was too worried about), but the wax kept coming back.

Since then, I've been monitoring his ear 4-5 time a week and using ear flush (from the vet) at least once a week. The amount of wax settled down a bit but it just didn't look like getting any better.

I found some pimples in his ear last week and while researching it on line, I found this product. It is actually a lot cheaper to buy directly from PetAlive website (they are having a deal right now), but did not wan to wait so I ordered through amazon (I get all my shipments in 2 days with Prime membership).

The biggest difference I noticed is that the strong odor he had from his infected ear is totally gone on the 2nd day and actually smells good now for the first time in 4 years! Skin color is already back to normal pinkish color and the pimples have gotten so much smaller and almost all gone.

Still have some wax left but it's coming out a little by little every day. According to PetAlive website, it will take for a while to be totally healed, so I will see how it goes and edit this post accordingly.

This is not a medicine and made from natural ingredients only, but it works better than anything else I've tried in the past. Hopefully this will be the cure and my dog doesn't have to suffer any longer.

I've looked through the entire PetAlive website and actually just purchased "Muscle and Joint Support" for my other dog (will arrive tomorrow).

Updates on June 23rd 2011:

I am having the same problem again... and I found another good product which also works very well. It is Zymox Optic Enzymatic Solution (Amazon also sells). Not smells as good as this one but it worked faster.

I was so happy to find this product compared to the toxic ear mite medication I had been using, which smelled terrible and seemed to cause more irritation to my cats' ears. I like the fact that it's natural and if the cats get it in their eyes or lick it, it can't cause problems like the miticide I had been using. Great, wonderful product! It is pricey, though.

Bag-Balm, Vermonts Original Moisturizing & Softening Ointment - 10 OzBag-Balm, Vermonts Original Moisturizing & Softening Ointment 10 Oz/ Pack, 2

This product has been around for years. It's been used for pretty much everything from cow udders to lubricating squeaky bedsprings. It's medicated, lubricated, and it lasts forever. Scratches, scrapes, dry cuticles, rough heels, diaper rash be-gone with Bag Balm. I've used it to lubricate the slide on my aviary door, to soften my dog's heel pads, as an under eye and lip balm, and I wouldn't be without it. Grandma did indeed know best when she said, 'Bag Balm. It's the way to go.'

The stuff is great, but this should not be marketed as a 2-pack. Its only one 10 oz tub and it can be bought elsewhere for much cheaper

Bag Balm just works it fixes all those rubs and irritations that can happen in bike shorts and keeps you riding comfortably Use a little every day as a preventative or just use when a problem occurs.

Bag Balm is greasy and will darken your leather seat but it is so worth it. I never tour without it. I gave small extra cans to other riders on this year's ride from San Diego to St. Augustine, FL it saved the ride for several of them. I just restocked at the next town with a Tru-Value Hardware store.

My wife, a non ride uses it for rubs also and loves it. It was a hard sell to get her to try it because it has a strong smell and is greasy, but once she did she is also hooked.

Safety First 5718 1-1/4-Inch by 18-Inch Concealed Mounting Grab Bar, Stainless Steel

Safety First 5718 1-1/4-Inch by 18-Inch Concealed Mounting Grab Bar, Stainless SteelThis are great grab rails.

Please note when looking for safety grab rails, there are two basic diameters to choose from; 1-1/4" and 1-1/2".

I tried the larger 1-1/2" ones (bought at Home Depot), but I didn't like the larger size for for this particular installation. I was using them next to a ladder climbing into the attic where a good grip is important.

Next to a tub or stool, I think the larger 1-1/2" size may be more comfortable for lifting youself up.

But next to a ladder where literally, your "grip" keeps you from falling, the smaller diameter size really feels better. And they provide 500lbs loading same as the 1-1/2".

I bought a pair of these 12" long, plus a pair of 18", a 24" and a 42"

Note that the length is measured from the center-to-center of each tube where it meets the wall. Extra "blocking" may be needed inside your studded wall for the 3 screws at each end.

I had one minor gripe, they just throw these bars (each in it's own plastic bag) into a cardboard box and ship it. I was surprised they were not beat up.

As usual, Amazon had the best price and free shipping too. I love that!

The grab bar was easy to install and I feel better having it in the tub area. I use it for stability.

It's a great size to have and it can almost fit under most seats in the car (but I would advise not to do that if you use a lot of floor-venting for AC or heat as it's this is plastic and could dry out a lot of the items in the kit, you could just block off the vent altogether).

ET 36-Inch Pinch Style Pick-up Tools Trash Grabber with Aluminum Handle

ET 36-Inch Pinch Style Pick-up Tools Trash Grabber with Aluminum HandleYeah it's cheap, but it's not worth it. The claw is made of hard plastic (not grippy at all, and slips off lots of things), and the grip is more awkward than other claws I've used. There's a lot of play in the mechanism, and the whole thing just doesn't work very well for picking things up.

If you really need something cheap for picking up trash or something, this might work for you. If you want to use it indoors though, this probably isn't the right one to get.

This grabber and pick up tool is lightweight, works well and is reasonably priced. I would have preferred if the control parts that one squeezes to manipulate the tool had a softer feel (perhaps rubber vs hard molded plastic).

I passed over a $4.99 reacher/grabber at the Home Improvement store because it was too flimsy and cheap.

This one is actually of poorer quality than those.

It's strangely engineered, hard to hold, and most importantly the "jaws" don't line up properly and cross when you squeeze too hard.

Useless. First item I've ever returned to Amazon.

Adventure Medical Kits SOL Origin Survival Tool

SOL Origin Survival Kit and Essential Survival ToolsSOL is a good company and has some quality products, but unfortunately this "kit" is not one of them. For what you get the kit is far too bulky, not nearly comprehensive enough for the price, and the combo knife/whistle/light is just outright junk.

You can build your own much more comprehensive "pocket kit". I'd start with a top quality Wenger 16981 lock blade Swiss Army Knife (has a great saw and other useful tools and it is available here at Amazon) and add the other items included in this SOL Kit. You won't spend much more than the SOL kit and you'll have much better equipment in a smaller space.

I bought a survival kit tin from bepreparedtosurvive and added Katadyn MicroPur Purification Tablets In Your Choice of Styles, a liter water bag, a Streamlight 73001 Nano Light Miniature Keychain LED Flashlight, Black, a Adventure Medical Kits Fox 40 Rescue Howler Whistle the Wenger 16981 Evolution Lock S 13 Swiss Army Knife Ergo Grip With Safety Lock Blade a few strips of removable backing duct tape, a few survival food tablets, some 250lb kevlar thread, safety pins (free from the dry cleaner), a signal mirror, a fresnel lens (solar fire starter), a flint + steel and some tinder, a few fishhooks and small spool of BRAIDED fishing line (doesn't tangle like monofiliment line). I also added a BugX Insect Repellent Towelette 25 Foil Packs/Box 30% DEET in a Water Based Formula That Is Non-greasy and Non-staining. Stuff a few bandaids, steri-strips, and a packet of neosporin in the odd spaces left over and you'll be pretty well prepared for minor emergencies.

Wrap the tin with an Adventure Medical Heatsheets Emergency Blanket, and some more kevlar thread then put it in a ziplock for a real pocket kit. That's food, water, shelter, fire, and tools all in less space than the SOL kit which lacks some of these basic requirements.

I bought this little SOL kit, thinking it was of the same caliber as some of their other products, but right from the beginning I was disappointed with the bulk, poor quality, and lack of components. This is a cool gadgetty toy, but it lacks substance, and the backbone of the kit, the knife, is weak and easily broken. It's a wannabe tool in a toy survival kit. You can do a much better job yourself, even using the cheap and ubiquitious Altoids tin.

Sorry SOL, you just didn't get this one right.

I have been waiting for this item since it was first announced.

The list price from the 3rd party amazon seller ($84) is much higher than the actual MSRP ($60). However amazon's discount brings it down to a reasonable cost, compared to other buying options. Just make sure you don't think you are getting 40% off, because you aren't.

The case is big. Think 2 or 3 altoids tins stacked on each other, or 2-3 decks of playing cards. It does fit well into a baggy jeans or jacket pocket though. The case is very well made, from nice hard plastic. The main container has a rubber o-ring to provide waterproofing. It seems like it would take reasonable drops or impacts quite well.

Unfortunately, the usable space of the box is much less than you would get from 2/3 altoids cans. This is because over 1/2 of the thickness of the box is taken up by the built in tools. Now, if you consider that you would also take up that space if things were loose in the box, it comes out pretty fair, but there is "dead" loss due to the structure that holds things in place, and you lost flexibility in choosing what to pack. I wish they had the case more open, with the tools just loose inside to maximize space and flexibility.

The knife is nice, but not very durable. It is very small (swiss army sized?), but fits well in the hand, and has a nice blade. The knife is exceptionally easy to open one handed (the easiest knife to open I have, except for the assisted open ones). The handle is light plastic however, so any heavy duty (or really even light/medium) chopping or battoning would destroy it immediately. The knife is really only useful for cutting cord/cloth/seatbelt or perhaps shaving some small sticks into tinder etc. You could use it to fillet a fish, or clean a small animal. Certainly better than nothing, but any serious carrier will need to have a more heavy duty knife. The knife has a lock to hold it open, and locks into the case with a small button to release. While you can open the knife easily one handed, it is a tad bit hard to get out of the case one handed. I really recommend carrying a higher quality knife in addition to this for almost any situation

The light on the knife is pitiful. A very low intensity LED. Possibly good enough for providing very close up light to see by while lighting a fire or something (assuming you are lighting the fire a few inches away). Completely useless for navigation/signaling/travel. This is the brightness of a single LED keychain light for getting a key into a lock etc. Possibly could be used to read by.

The whistle on the knife is decent. Not equal to a dedicated howler or something though, but very convenient, and much louder than yelling.

The compass is simple and functional. No where near as accurate or reliable as a dedicated military style compass, but serviceable in an emergency. The compass must be held perfectly level. Even a slight tip causes the edge of the disc to touch the plastic and freeze the compass so it does not rotate freely. The compass is stored outside the case, so drops and impacts could shatter the bubble fairly easily rendering it broken.

The fire starter is basically a cigarette lighter, without the fuel. Easy to use one handed, and tosses out some nice sparks. Certainly not as powerful as a dedicated flint/magnesium/blastmatch, but good in a pinch. Make sure you spin the wheel the right direction.

The signaling mirror is very nice. Equal to ones purchased individually. Has a nice aiming hole, and some instructions. Comes with a protective sticker applied as to prevent scratches. Not removable from the case.

the supplies are ok. Some tinder, wire, twine, and aluminum foil. Also a small fishing/sewing kit. They barely fit into the case. You would certainly want additional supplies such as a survival blanket (which would absolutely not fit in the case)

All in all, you can absolutely find MUCH higher quality and more powerful tools if you buy separately. However, the case is convenient as an every day carry item to make sure you have at least minimal basics with you at all times. If you are the kind who carries a real knife, real flashlight, multi-tool, etc at all times then the kit probably has less value, but I will likely keep it in my jacket pocket all the time for use as backup

For those considering an "all in one" survival tool such as the various 7 in one, 6 in one tools available this one is CLEARLY superior. The other ones out there are absolute junk in comparison, and do not provide a knife or the consumable supplies. It is however quite a bit bigger and more expensive.

For me, this will replace the 7 in one I was carrying (heading to the trash!). The BlastMatch I carried will get moved into the backpack kit instead of the every day kit. I will continue to carry an assisted opening folder, and a more powerful pocket flashlight.

If you're a serious outdoorsman, camper, survivalist, or naturist, you're not going to buy this kit anyway. You'll construct your own kit out of best-of-breed equipment. For the normal guy who needs something in an emergency situation, the Origin rocks. I don't understand the sentiment from others that the kit is cheaply constructed. I pounded six tent stakes into the ground with mine. It's made of *very* thick plastic.

Yes, if you used the tools in this kit on a routine basis as your primary gear during camping trips, they would not last. They're not meant to. They're meant for emergencies. The knife in this kit is not meant for you to give up your primary field knife ... it's meant to be used if you find yourself without your gear and you otherwise have nothing else to rely on. It also teaches a beginner to focus on the absolute basics necessary for survival.

Put this in your car, bugout pack, or minimum carry kit. It's an excellent tool of last resort.

Depending on who you are, and for what scenarios you plan to use this, determines whether or not this kit is for you.

I write this from a perspective of an advanced backpacker with extensive military training, including various survival training. I am not a Bear Grylls nor any other type of professional survivalist. In my younger days, I loved the challenge of self-induced suck-fests. I consider myself an able enthusiast, not an expert.

I find the biggest question I faced with the SOL Origin was if it was worth the cost. Here is my opinion. For beginners, yes. For advanced folks, it is worth it as an easy toss in backup to a primary kit, maybe for the fanny pack when leaving behind the main backpack. For the seasoned outdoorsman, make your own kit and save the money.

For the average Joe, the beginner, this kit is an exceptional insurance policy. It's simple. It's basic. It will help you survive an emergency situation for a short period until help finds you. For $30 some bucks, it's cheap insurance that's easy to toss in the car and take along on a nature trip.

Why is it so valuable for this kind of person?

First, it's there. No kit is good if you don't take it with you. I wouldn't call it pocketable unless you like big things in your cargo pocket, but it is easily packable. Second, it provides the tools to overcome the biggest threats to emergency survival: regulating body temperature (fire/heat), signaling tools in order to be found, a guide to find a good water source, and tools to help find and get food. This kit doesn't do the work for you, but it assists the novice in figuring it out.

Let's break down the content.

Survival Guide: This gives you the basic fundamentals of survival. It will arm you just enough to make it to the "Get Found" stage. It will not turn you into Man vs. Wild. I do wish some of the graphics were better done with a little more explanation for the novice. The biggest value, in my opinion, is the instruction on getting water, in a generalized environment.

Fire Starter and Kindling: The fire starter relies on the same principle as the common lighter used by smokers, except that there is no fuel. You spin it just like a lighter and sparks fly. It has rubber grips to help you hold it securely. The included kindling will get a fire started, but it won't keep a fire going. Before lighting the kindling, be sure you have a collection of small, thin, dry twigs. The included kindling is designed to start a small fire. Along with your small, thin, dry twigs, you'll want another collection of small sticks that have some meat to them, but not thick like a log. After you have a good fire going with the bigger sticks, then you can burn bigger pieces of wood. As you can see, the kit gets you going, but you still have to work to get the fire.

Signal Mirror: If you've never used a signal mirror, learn. It's easy to practice in the back yard on a sunny day. In a survival situation, and in the right condition (various degrees of sunny), it is a powerful tool that can get you found from many miles away. Why a signal mirror is superior to any old reflector, is because you can aim it fairly accurately. If nothing else, it's a handy mirror while camping.

Whistle: On the opposite end of the very same fire starter, is the whistle. Anything that can extend the range with which you can be found, is valuable. When the sun isn't shining, blow the whistle. In some conditions where the sun doesn't shine, sound actually travels better and further. Blowing a whistle also takes a little less out of you than yelling. Every little bit counts in an emergency situation.

Compass: Generally speaking, it is best to stay put when lost. However, if you generally know what direction a road, trail, lake, river is, this will generally get you there. It is not a precision compass like the kind I used in the military for land navigation, but it points north and is a valuable aid. It doesn't matter how good you are, in the thickest of woods at night, everyone can get disoriented.

Knife: This is a small knife and yet will be a handy tool. It fits nicely into the bottom of the case. The blade seems sharp and has a nice curve to it for filleting and cutting. Like everything else, it is bright orange. Since the knife is pretty small, you will appreciate that it is easy to see and find. Common knife use often means setting it down at times and small knives are easy to lose in nature.

Light: The knife also incorporates a small LED light. I like this one because for being cheap, it is not a press and hold light. You can click on it and it stays on. It's not a powerful light, but it gets the job done in a pinch. It's not a flashlight, it's a small light source that's there when you need it. This light should last hours even with the small watch type battery.

Sheet: For a simple sheet, this has many uses from signaling, to gathering water, to storing things. I didn't open it up, but I don't think it's big enough to be a body blanket.

Needle/Sewing Kit: I see this more for fishing. It's not enough to help you live on the land for a month.

Wire: It's there. There are situation where it would be handy. I just don't see it as the go to item in this kit, unless your emergency becomes extended. Then, it could serve you well with a little more advanced skills.

Lanyard: In situations where you are using this kit, make sure you have the lanyard attached and in use. You don't want to lose this.

----------

I returned this kit for several reasons.

First, the plastic latch had a small break. Every time I opened it , the latch would pop off. Very annoying. While secure, it did work, so no worries about losing the seal on the watertight compartment. However, I don't want to be searching for that latch when it pops off every time.

Second, I decided to build my own kit. I know what I need and want. I know that the tools I want need to be more robust. Furthermore, I want to be able to live off the land if need be. My kit does just that. My kit also costs far, far more than this, and fills up an entire medium-sized backpack.

Third, for me, I live and breathe tactical. I wanted a kit that could serve both as an emergency survival kit that gets me by until I'm found, and for the unlikely doomsday scenario, provides the tactical means to remain out of sight and out of mind. I like things that can serve more than one function.

If you are like me, this kit is not worth the money. However, it's not to say it is a bad kit. It needs to fit the right person for the right situation, and it in that case, it is a great item.

Altogether a wonderful bit of kit. We keep it in our Get-home-bag in our minivan. Once you remove and attach the lanyard, there's enough room to put a SE MT908 11 Function Credit Card Size Survival Pocket Tool inside.

When one SERIOUSLY considers the usefulness of fishing hooks in an urban or even a wilderness setting, one can forthrightly suggest replacing them with something more relevant. If you truly live near fish that you can actually catch, there are other kits more suitable. Other than suturing wounds (with barbed hooks? Pitiful sight, that) I can't imagine anyone in the 'hood making practical use of them. Virtual Skyhooks may be a possibility. ;-)

There are some YouTube videos about "always carry" kits created by certified obsessive-compulsive folks that will simply AMAZE you as to what you can stuff into a mint tin. Have fun; go saunter about over there and see what you discover.
